Desktop Computers
If you have a desktop computer or laptop and are unsure which version of USB it currently has you just need to go to Device ManagerĀ you can get to this by right clicking on My Computer and selecting properties from here scroll down to the USB section and then expand it.
You should see something like USB 2 Enhanced Host Controller.
Another way to test is to plug a USB 2 device into your computer. If it has USB one you will get the message you have plugged a high speed device into a low speed port
If you find your computer is only USB 1 the only way to get it to USB 2 is to add a card.
Luckily though they are Pretty Cheap.
If you do or you just want to install it, for desktop or tower computers you will need a USB 2.0 PCI card , these can be purchased from most good online computer shops.
The card has up to 8 USB 2.0 ports .

I have a total of 6 and by the time I have keyboard, external hard drive , scanner , external DVD writer plugged in this only leaves me with one, and I was thinking of getting a printer , so thats all my ports gone, so better to have more than you need for now.

Laptops / Notebooks

PCMCIA / Carbus Slot
If you have a Laptop or Notebook make sure it has a PCMCIA or Cardbus port this will be a long thin port usually in the side of the notebook / laptop .
You can purchase a Cardbus adapter PCMCIA USB that will give you up to four USB ports.

PCMCIA or Carbus USB 2.0 Card
Note it does use both of the PCMCIA slots though.
Other than that options are really limited, a docking station may be the answer , they can be quite expensive, but some of the larger ones can take full size PCI cards.
