Taking a Screen Dump or Screen Capture

A screen dump enables you to capture the current image on your computer screen, taking a Screen capture or dump is always a very useful piece of knowledge to have, some documents are protected against direct copying or printing which can be very frustrating, what do you do it you don’t have a printer and need to be able to save information ?.

This is where the screen capture or screen dump comes in, we even have two options to decide on how we actually wish to capture.

The Print Screen key, every computer has one of these, simply takes a complete image of everything currently displayed on your screen.

For a much more precise screen shot if you use the Alt & Print Screen keys together then you only take a screen shot of the top window, omitting any background stuff. This is a very useful option as it not only looks more professional than showing unrelated pieces of screen information, but it also takes up less space or requires little or no after editing.

Where is the screen shot or dump and how can I see it ?

The next thing we need to do is open your favourite graphics application, even Word or Word Pad will suffice.

Now either hit the CTRL & V keys together, or from the Edit menu choose Paste.

Depending on the application you choose you can of course completely edit the image using an application such as Photoshop or Paint Shop pro , you can download fully working evaluation versions of both of these, it’s also worth noting Paint Shop Pro even comes complete with its own version of screen capture , with this you actually choose the size of the screen shot giving you greater flexibility.
