The USB Internal Hub Motherboard
The USB Internal
hub motherboard basically refers to the amount of USB ports that
a motherboard has attached to it, it can be a little confusing
when we see USB ports on the rear plus two or more on the front,
but this simply means there is a cable running between the front
of the pc and the motherboard connecting the front USB ports.
But whatever
motherboard you decide to purchase the average amount of USB
ports needed is presently 5 this includes, mouse, keyboard,
printer, digital camera, MP3 Player,
These are the most
common USB peripherals but of course there are many more devices
around. Devices such as digital cameras and MP3 players are not
used all the time so the port can be swapped between these part
time peripherals, but if given the choice would it not be nice
to at least have the option to use both at the same time.
But if you ever need
to you can always expand the amount of USB ports, simply by
installing a USB 2 card (remember USB2, as opposed to USB1, USB2
being around 10 times as fast) a USB card will have a PCI
interface which will allow you to install it as an internal card
as long as you have enough free PCI slots.
If you don’t your
choices are more limited and you will have to go for an external
USB hub, the problem with external USB hub is the fact that
you’ll lose a USB port as this connects to a USB port, plus you
will need an external power supply to sufficiently power USB
port powered devices.
Even if you have a
laptop you can still expand by using a PCMCIA USB cards, laptops
have to generally be the biggest problem with USB limitations,
after all the average laptop only seems to come with around 3
USB ports, and by using a USB hub you are in effect down to two,
but by adding a PCMCIA type USB hub you’ll gain up to 4 extra
ports, plus the power levels will be higher than simply daisy
chaining a non powered USB hub onto a USB port.
If you are looking to
share peripherals such as printers, it is better to purchase a
free standing USB hub which operates independently of the
computer or computers it is attached to otherwise you’ll need to
share printers etc through your pc, meaning that it will need to
be left on when you wish to print from other computers.
