Backup Other data , make sure you've got a complete backup of everything

Backup other data
We’ve already covered backup everything else such as files , documents and other general data, but what about if you need to backup other data such as the more obscure things.

Do you need to save any cookies ?

Do you use any other Internet browser apart from Internet Explorer and would like to save your favorites ?

Do you chat on MSN , do you save your conversations ?, have you received any files this way ?

Do you have any custom templates for Microsoft Word or Excel ?

Does anyone else use the computer ? , do they have files that need to be backed up ?

Cookies

If you need to backup cookies it’s very straight forward there will be a cookies directory within your user directory i.e documents and settings/user/cookies from here you just need to copy the file to your backup location

Computer-adviser.com backup other article Do you use any other browser apart from internet explorer.

We covered backing up from internet explorer in our other backup article

Other Browsers

If you are using Mozilla Firefox just go the bookmarks directory and select Manage Bookmarks, now simply choose Export from the file menu and choose a location for them.

If you are a Netscape user To export your bookmarks it’s pretty similar to Firefox, “ due to Netscape being based on Firefox “ select Manage Bookmarks from the bookmarks menu , now from the File menu select export.

MSN

If you’re an MSN user, you’ve probably received various files, you might have even saved the chat dialogue.

If you’d like to back up either, just go to the following location,

Documents and Settings/username/My Documents/My Received Files

Here you will find anything that has been received, you just need to substitute the username part of the string for your actual username

Do you have any custom templates for Microsoft Word or Excel ?

If your using a custom template for Microsoft Word or Excel and wish to back it up, just go to

Documents and settings/username/Application Data/Microsoft/Templates ,

replace the username part of the string for your actual login username. Here you will be able to find any Microsoft Word or Excel templates.

If like me you’ve taken a while creating a custom template , it’s the kind of thing you really won’t want to lose.

Other Users Data

How many people use the same computer ? , do you need to backup other data for anyone else, do they have files stored anywhere, if so the majority will be stored within their user area, which is located under c:\documents and settings\username

substitute the username part of the string for the actual username of the profile, here you will find most files and documents,

Otherwise checkout our other backup sections where we advise on how to locate files types. In case you came to this page without checking out our main backup everything page where we cover all aspects of a complete backup. Click here for Main backup Page
