Basic CPU Overclocking

What is basic cpu overclocking ? How can you do this ? What are the risks ? What do you need to look out for ?

Cpu overclocking can be a difficult subject to grasp, especially for the non techie, to get down to this technical level there is no question that you will really need to know what you are doing, you are taking the life of your pc in your hand and a computer not clocked properly could be permanently damaged.

Gaining a cpu speed increase effectively speeds up your pc beyond manufacturers specifications, a bit like performance chipping a turbo charged car.

After successful cpu clocking your pc will experience a whole new lease of life, and many processor tasks will be quicker, but due to the extra cpu speed more heat will be generated which can be a problem if there is inadequate cooling for the processor.
To begin our clocking you will need to go into your BIOS.

This can be accessed by rebooting your pc and generally hitting either Del or F2 keys, but this can vary depending on manufacturer.

Now you need to look for the front side bus settings or FSB, from here you can force the processor to run faster, but don't get too carried away trying to make a processor run too fast or as mentioned before you will damage your system.

A much simpler way of cpu overclocking is to purchase a motherboard with cpu clocking software, manufacturers such as Gigabyte can provide this.

Now you simply test you processors extra performance by using the application 3D mark, be sure to run it before and after overclocking your cpu

Before testing basic overclocking on your home pc it's worth trying it on an older pc that you don't mind destroying if worst comes to worst.
