Finding the Best Adsense Placement

Having the best Adsense placement is one way to increase the revenue potential of your site, the other way is to fine tune the actual Adsense ad settings.

Add both of these together and you could well be on your way to some major bucks.

Just imagine if you currently have an Adsense click through rate of 1% and you get around 40 clicks per day at 30c per click, this would equate to $12 per day.

Not too much eh?

By tweaking and finding the best Adsense placement on the page there is no reason why this cannot be increased to around 5x, which would then give $60 per day, which works out to almost $22,000, not bad for a side income.

Now comes the hard part

Testing Ads is the hardest part as it means making a change which is easy and then leaving for a week or two to bed in so we can get a clear picture of the Adsense click through rate, waiting being the worst part.

My rules for testing and finding the best Adsense placement

1) Only make a single change each time.
2) Allow proper time to test each change
3) Listening to others.
4) Always keep testing, testing and testing.
5) Use Google Analytics
6) The testing Method

Only make a single change each time
By making only a single change for each test it’s much easier to see what is clearly working and what is not.

A single change can be anything, such as moving an ad, increasing the font size or changing colors.

Allow proper time to test each change
Be patient, monitor each change you make for a week before making yet another change.

It really takes a week to build up an idea of how much it will generate on average during this period, using single days may be misleading as the income on pages and ads will generally fluctuate each day.

Listening to Other
It’s great to listen to others when it comes to the best Adsense placement and ad settings, but what might be great for their site might not be so great for yours, by all means test everything, but keep it in a slow controlled way.

An prime example of this
Many people recommend not making your ads look like ads which is fine, but I have personally found ads which are too inconspicuous may not even be noticed or clicked on, I try to make the ads look like ads, but just not too in the readers face, this works for me, but I could have just followed this advice and paid the price with a lower Adsense click through rate.

Test other people’s ideas for the best Adsense placement – But also test your own.

Always keep testing, testing and testing
Never settle when it comes to what you think is the best Adsense placement, if your site has an incredible click through rate the chances are a minor change could make it even better.

Use Google Analytics
Products such as Google Analytics offer heaps of statistical information which can tell you just about everything in regard to your ads and pages, its free and if used properly will help to increase your websites income.

The Testing Method

To find my best Adsense placement I will generally start with 3 x large 336x280 ads and loosely follow the webpage heat map.

The brighter orange in the middle being the most successful and the lighter orange areas being the next best.

a)     Two or three placement variations and see what works for you.

b)    Test with and without text wrapping.

c)     Font sizes start small and work to large

d)    Font colors – remember most people associate blue with a link, but if the overall color scheme of your site uses another color this might be the way forward for you.

Only test 1 item per week this includes only one ad box. Don’t be tempted to change the ad, even if you’re getting a poor Adsense click through rate let it run for the week, ads have a habit of fluctuating and things may pick up after 3 or so days, and if not then you can be sure it’s not a good setting

It sounds simple, and on the whole it is, but there are a lot of combinations to check when we consider.

Best Adsense placement – 4 options
Font Size – 3 options
Font Type – 3 options
Font Colors – this can be broken down further into Title, Body and Url – 100’s of options

Even some of the apparent no. no’s such as no border, opaque background colors should be tested.

Remember to make a note of every change you make, otherwise you may just be covering old ground a few months down the line.

Once you are happy with one of your ad blocks then its time work on the next one, you may find a seesaw effect will occur as ads will compete against each other.

By fine tuning the second and third ads the Adsense click through rate of the first may well go down a little, this is nothing to be alarmed about it just means the other ads are attractive, the main thing is to be getting the clicks.

If you’re finding that the second and third ads are beating the first, then its back to the drawing board with the first, as although your getting clicks your first ad should give you the highest on average earnings per click.
