Cannot Install Internet Explorer 7 ?

When you cannot install Internet Explorer 7 this is made all the more frustrating by the install looking as though it’s finished, but it’s only when we try to run IE that we then get the error.

Internet Explorer 7 could not be installed

To remedy this try the following.

1. Make sure you have been installing Internet Explorer using a login account that has administrator access to the computer. You can verify this by typing lusrmgr.msc from the Start Menu – Run and then selecting groups / administrators and making sure your login name is here.

2. Disable any antivirus or antispyware software, also make sure your firewall is not causing any problems, Remember to enable these after the installation.

3. Cannot write to the registry, even though you have local administrator access
From the Start menu – Run %windir%\ie7.log
Now perform a search for IECUSTOM: Key is still unwriteable

If you find this text this means that there is a permission problem when installing internet explorer.
Make a note of the name of the problem registry key

Launch Regedit from Start – Run menu and browse to the location of the key
Now from the Edit menu select Permissions and make sure Administrator has Full Control

4. From the Start menu – Run %windir%\ie7.log Now perform a search for ArchiveFileForUninstall:ArchiveSingleFile Cancelled

If found this means an Internet Explorer 6 file cannot be archived allowing the Internet explorer 7 file to be copied to the location.

From the Start Menu – Run echo y| cacls "%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll" /P BUILTIN\Users:R "BUILTIN\Power Users:C" BUILTIN\Administrators:F "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F" This will reset permissions and hopefully allow you to complete the installation

5. Make sure that no other applications are running when installing IE 7, check within Task Manager to confirm no applications are still running, To access task manager Hit CTRL ALT DEL keys and select task manager, or Right click on the blue menu bar and select Task Manager.
