Cannot Renew IP Address

Cannot renew IP address , this happens for a number for reasons, cannot see a DHCP or dynamic host control protocol allocating device or the device is not working. The network card is not working properly renewing ip address

Make sure the network card is working properly

Firstly right click on the network icon and select repair, Next right click on the network icon again and select Status, check the address

If the pc is still not being allocated an IP address, make sure your computer is setup to receive an IP address dynamically and does not have a static address is place, this can be a common problem if a computer has recently been connected to a corporate network as many still use manual IP addressing.

Double click on your network icon and choose Properties, double click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP, make sure the settings are set to Obtain an IP address automatically, Also make sure Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected.

One point to note, remember if your computer has a fixed or static IP address make a note of it before switching to DHCP as it can be a real pain to connect to a corporate network otherwise.

Renewing IP address

If you simply want to renew your IP address, you’ll need to go to the DOS or Command prompt, to do this, Go to the Start Menu and in the Run box, type cmd, now you’ll see the black DOS type screen, type the following as needed.

Ipconfig this will show your current IP addressing details Ipconfig /all will show your current IP addressing details in more detail Ipconfid /release this will release your current DHCP details Ipconfig /renew this will go to the DHCP server and attempt to obtain an IP address Ipconfig /flushdns this will delete the DNS cache, this can be useful if you find your IP address is ok, but you cannot browse

DHCP Server

Next we need to look at your DHCP server, pretty much all ADSL modems have a DHCP server built in, and usually it’s just a case of powering off the device for about 30 seconds. After this it gets a little bit more technical as we’ll need to hard boot your modem, this can be done using the hard reboot procedure, normally it’s a case of using a paper clip in its reset hole and then holding for 30 seconds, but this needs to be verified by the device documentation. Note.. make sure you have a backup of your ADSL settings before you perform this reset as everything will be reset to factory settings.
