Just about every serious gamer dreams of having a career in computer game design . What could be more fun and exciting for a computer game fanatic than being paid for designing your own computer games?

I love playing games, and have done so for a long time, I was also guilty of occasionally fantasizing about having a career in computer game design , I even had a try at creating my own games.

Today the computer game design industry is massive, and there are lots of positions for those who want a job in this field. The downside is landing a job in computer game design is the difficulty in getting a foot in the door, plus it requires a comprehensive knowledge of programming languages.

Getting a degree in computer programming is a good first step, but even this does not guarantee a job, you really need to be passionate about what you want to do, this will give you a much better chance of succeeding, the chances are you’ll be interviewed by someone who is also passionate about gaming. If you can also provide examples of your work, this will also go a long way, even by offering to work initially for a lower salary will help.

If you enjoy the nuts and bolts level of games “programming”, then a career in computer game design may be something that you can do. Having a genuine love for computer games can also motivate you as well.

One of my friends who has been working as a games programmer for a number of years now, said, although he loves his job, it was completely different from what he expected when he first considered a career in computer game design Today computer games are enormous projects that can take years to complete. Originally it was a case of one or two people could create a game, usually in their garage or bedroom. But now there are actually computer game design teams who all contribute to, these teams include various types of specialist programmers, sound creators, graphics artists, plus more.

When you become a computer games programmer, you can find lots of opportunities in the computer game design industry. Programmers with a few popular games behind them, can expect to earn large salaries, plus get more input into any projects, in terms of ideas.

If you would still love to work in the computer games design arena , but not as a programmer , as this does not suit everyone, there are however many more opportunities on offer, which may offer an easier way into a software house as you can generally easily cross train if you already have skills such as writing or graphic design.

These other positions include, games designers, writers, graphic designers, audio creators, even game testers, but don’t get too carried away thinking you’ll just be playing games, if only it was we’d all want to be games testers. You could even have a career providing support to all of the in-house systems, which can be very rewarding.
