CD Repair Article
Please note all of the following CD repair tips can also be used on DVD’s as well as CD’s.
When it comes to CD repair , firstly there are a few things to understand,
depending on the damage not all can be repaired. If it just has scratches and you just need a CD scratch remover then the chances are you’ll be able to repair your CD with our CD scratch remover tips and hints, but if your CD has gouges or cracks then you’ve pretty much lost the contents.
Just about everyone has problems trying to read a CD at some stage. Generally no matter how hard you try to look after your CD’s they just seem to attract scratches. Most very small scratches do not affect performance, but some of the larger scratches can prevent read errors on the CD.
What actually happens is a CD player uses a laser beam to read data from the disk. Each CD has a protective plastic layer, and it’s this that gets scratched, and then the laser is unable to pass though the scratched protective layer, and now we get the unreadable errors.
So now we need to be able to perform a repair and remove the scratch on the CD. To repair the CD all of the following tips can be applied, but in actual fact they all perform the same thing, but at different levels. Each repair technique basically involves re-scratching each CD you wish to repair, the scratches made by all of the compounds below make very fine scratches, thus removing the larger scratches in the process.
Toothpaste is the first compact disk repair solution to try, toothpaste being a very light abrasive is very good for removing CD scratches, simply put a small amount on a cotton wool ball and gently rub, you may need to add a little water here. Once your happy with the CD repair make sure you remove all toothpaste with water and dry the CD.
Metal polish, something like good old brasso, just wipe gently with the wadding or cotton wool, when finished apply petroleum jelly and wipe with a clean dry cloth.
Baking soda can be used for cleaning a whole host of things, and is very good for removing slightly worse scratches, again use a soft clean cloth to perform your disk repair , remember to wipe clean before trying CD.
There are a number of cleaning solutions on the market that are very good at CD repair , but remember to try first on test CD’s
If you really don’t wish to get your hands dirty you could always checkout your local video store, many of these today offer a compact disk repair service, it’s usually pretty cheap, but at the end of the day the results are generally the same as what you can achieve at home.
One other point to think about, if a CD does not work in one pc, if you can try it in another before trying a disk repair, different CD/DVD drives have different tolerances, so some may read a scratched CD while others may not.
