Sounds like you need to clean your mouse, cleaning a mouse is very easy. Firstly which type of mouse are you using, there are two distinct types, with ball and without the laser type.

firstly unplug your mouse or make sure the computer is switched off. (if its not USB it may not working until the computer is restarted)

Computer mouse cleaning / the mouse ball
Remove the computer mouse ball , usually there is a small circular plate holding it in, this rotates a few degrees and can then be removed, and the ball will fall out. Now use a piece of kitchen towel with some foam cleaner to rub the ball removing any grime.

Now look into the mouse where you removed the ball and checkout the rollers, these usually pickup a layer of dirt, they should be shiny plastic. For light dirt use more kitchen towel with a small amount of soaked in foam cleaner.

For heavy grime on the rollers an unfolded paper clip is ideal. Only use the sides if the paper clip, not the end or you’ll scratch the roller. Now tap & shake the mouse the right way up to remove the loosened grime.

Now give the mouse ball cover a clean as well, simply by wiping.

Replace the computer mouse ball and cover.

Remember to wipe under the mouse as well, the little feet can also pickup grime and dirt.

Another place that’s forgotten is the mouse mat or pad, give this a good wipe with your kitchen towel and foam cleaner, your mouse should now be working correctly.

If you’re using a laser mouse the only part that may require cleaning is the small feet on the underneath.

A good mouse mat will make a big difference either to a laser or ball mouse, it’s worth spending a few more bucks to get hold of one specifically for the mouse type.

It’s best to carry out computer mouse cleaning every few weeks, this way it will only take a minute or so as any dirt will be easy to remove.
There’s nothing you can really do to stop a mouse getting clogged up, but we can take steps to slow this down, such as not eating or drinking over a work space and generally making sure your work space is kept clean, but even then periodical cleaning of the mouse is still recommended.
