Ivan: Question

Hello, I have a DELL precision 330 workstation running win XP pro SP3. I am getting repeated warning errors in my machines system event log, the event ID 51. Saying the following:- An error was detected on device \\Device\\Harddisk3\\D during a paging operation. **NOTE: I am NOT a novice user & I have tried repeatedly to find a fix for this problem. Microsoft's own site is on zero help. **The drive in question that this applies to is an external WD My Book Mirror edition x1 TB, it is connected via USB 2.0 & the correct cable that came with the unit. **The disk drive works perfectly & there are no errors on the drive itself. I have turned off write caching on the disk but this has made zero difference. **Event ID 51 occurs repeatedly every few hours, it seems to occur when data is written too this disk or when read back from the disk but that's as far as I can get. I have no solution its really annoying me. ANY help would be really appreciated. I'm sure I'm not the only user seeing event ID 51 either.

Answer:

Hi Ivan try the following link and fixes - there seems to be a few situations that can cause this error-

Go into your systems BIOS and enable - System BIOS cacheable - Video RAM cacheable - and make sure HDD is set to smart

Question: Cheryl
Why does my laptop screen suddenly become negative in colour? Is it due to lack of ventilation or over-heating of battery? Thanks

Answer:
Sounds more like a video card issue - hard to say if this is simply a poor connection or an issue with the actual video card, if you can connect to an external screen and see if the issue re-occurs, this will tell us if the issue is simply a connection or an issue with the video card, if your laptop is under warranty now is the time to use it.

Question: John
Hi. I just recently got a problem with my video card or i think so. I was at work and I got home to find out that the my computer will not turn on. I thought maybe the power supply was out cause of my graphic card, but then i removed my graphic card and turned on my computer with no problem. I find out later that day that my brother was playing games and told me a smelt some type of burning smell while playing. I think my video card fried, but I'm not to sure. I now do no have my video card installed but my computer is still working without it. I'm using a XFX 8800GT running on a 450W power supply. I also have an attachment heat sink with my video just in case something like this would happen. Please help me find out what the problem is. Please and Thanks .

Answer:
I think you have answered your own question a burning smell and now it will not work with the video card installed, on the card itself can you see any capacitors or the like that have a more bulbous look? this will be where the smell cam from, even if the card is not under warranty it may still be worth contacting the manufacturer as this could be part of a faulty batch and they may still consider exchanging it

Question: Vivek
Dear sir I have a problem in my laptop computer. Few days back my computer was running ok. I was downloading movies from www.mininova.org. During download i many times got message that my virtual memory is less still i kept on downloading movies. One of the movie also need to run some software which was downloaded along with it. I ran that software but i did not do rest of formalities as i was afraid that it might be virus so i deleted that movie. I was using my laptop normally. Now days back I saw that my AVG stopped updating. I uninstalled it many times and downloaded fresh copy of AVG and downloaded but it is not updating till now. Many time it got hanged and i had to switch off it many times. Finally i did install quick heal antivirus for one month and scanning with it and it showed few threats but it healed it now it is not showing any virus. But second thing i noticed that i found my message some times that a file of AVG is corrupted so do chkdsk. I did run chkdsk /f and restarted computer, laptop restarted but chkdsk does not take place. I repeated it many times but it does not started. I did chkdsk by clicking on my computer, properties, tools and scan disk. It gives message that unable to complete...I did same in safe mode also but did not get success. even i did put XP cd and did scan now also but it did not solve my problem. When i did run chkdsk only it shows some errors in chkdsk in program folder in avg file and also in yahoo messenger folder...please help me how to resolve problem

Answer:
What was the software that you ran? i would hazard a guess that as the computer was working fine before this you run some type of malware, and although you have managed to get rid of it, it has delivered its payload on your computer so the damage was done - you mention running AVG have you also run any antispyware software - try downloading and running spybot search and destroy or spyware doctor which is part of the Google pack - in addition to this as its difficult to ascertain what said malware has in effect done to your computer you have two choices after running the antispyware software - firstly try running awindows system restore back to the time when it last worked properly - is the issue is now simply settings this should work, but if files have actually been replaced you will need to run a Windows system repair. If you have a moment can you provide us with the name of the software that you installed.

Lesley: Question
Hi I have a laptop and I can't change settings on My Windows Update page. The area where I'd like to click on to install updates automatically is greyed over. Any ideas? many thanks.

Answer:
Is the laptop normally on a company network? sounds like a policy preventing this - if not run GPEDIT.MSC - under Windows settings - Administrative templates - Windows components - Windows update - check if any of these are set - if they are you need to specify a setting and not change to not configured, or it just remembers the last settings for example if configure automatic updates is set to disabled it needs to be changed to enabled to take effect

Nathan: Question
Today I have done a big upgrade to my PC, a new motherboard and processor (with the help of a professional, owns a shop, etc.) But after putting in my graphics card (Nvidia 8800 GT) whenever I try to boot windows, it does the normal stuff, with the windows logo loading the green bars, but after that all I get is a blank screen. P.S. I am in safe mode (with networking) right now to post this. I have also made sure the drivers are up to date, I downloaded them from Nvidia today. And I've already tried booting in in 800x600, and using 16 bit colour

Answer

As you have not replaced the hard drive, did you uninstall any software for your old video card? although you say you've installed the new drivers, it can only be a software/driver issue as you can get into the system in safe mode which uses a standard/generic vga driver.
If you have already tried this, uninstall directx or reinstall the latest version
