Windows Built in Computer Repair Tools

Windows has a number of built in computer repair tools that can help you to repair most software errors that you are encounter.

scandisk - scans for file and disk errors.
defragment - defragments hard drive.
system restore - allows you to restore the computer setting to an earlier time.
Disk cleanup - deletes files temporary/unused files and compresses unused.
Safe Mode - allows you to boot the computer without loading drivers and most start-up applications.

File and settings transfer wizard - backup settings and files and load them onto another computer.

Windows Support tools (these are located on the windows CD in the directory SUPPORTTOOLS, run the setup program to install them,

most of these run directly from the CMD or command line screen screen, to get to this go to the start menu and select run type CMD

I've added the Microsoft brief description to all the tools

Msicuu.exe (Windows Installer Cleanup Utility) The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, Msicuu, deletes the configuration data that Windows Installer maintains for a product that it installed, including directories, files, registry subkeys, and registry entries.

You can use Msicuu to remove the remnants of a corrupted Windows Installer installation that prevents you from installing a product correctly.

Msizap.exe (Windows Installer Zapper) This command-line tool deletes configuration data that Windows Installer maintains for products that it installs, including the directories, files, registry subkeys, and registry entries in which Windows Installer stores configuration data. You can use Msizap to remove remnants of corrupted Windows Installer installations that prevent you from installing a product correctly.

Netcap.exe (Network Monitor Capture Utility) This command-line tool allows a system administrator to monitor packets on a LAN and write the information to a log file. NetCap uses the Network Monitor Driver to sniff packets on the local segment that fit its filter criteria.

Netdiag.exe (Network Connectivity Tester) This command-line diagnostic tool helps to isolate networking and connectivity problems, by performing a series of tests to determine the state of your network client, and whether it is functional.

These tests, and the key network status information they expose, give network administrators and support personnel a more direct means of identifying and isolating network problems.

Moreover, because this tool does not require that parameters or switches be specified, support personnel and network administrators can focus on analyzing the output, rather than on training users how to use the tool.

Netdom.exe (Windows Domain Manager) This tool enables administrators to manage Windows 2000 domains and trust relationships from the command line.

Nltest.exe This command-line tool helps perform network administrative tasks. You can use NLTest to:

Performance Data Block Dump Utility (Showperf.exe) ShowPerf loads and runs the dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) of installed performance counters on local and remote computers running Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional,

and displays unformatted data from the internal data buffers of counters that loaded successfully and are enabled on the system.

Pfmon.exe (Page Fault Monitor) This command-line tool allows a developer or system administrator to monitor page faults that occur while an application is running. PFMon is especially useful to trace hard page faults.

(You can easily resolve soft page faults with Virtual Memory Manager.) A sustained high rate of hard page faults might indicate a shortage of memory and can cause a disk bottleneck.

Use PFMon to trace the source and number of page faults in a process and display the data in the command window, write it to a log file, or both.

Pmon.exe (Process Resource Monitor) This command-line performance tool displays several measures of the processor and memory use of processes running on the system.
