Computer Shutdown Slow ?
Read Our Slow Pc Power Off Guide

Is your computer shutdown slow ?
Generally this is caused by services or processes that are busy and windows to a major degree will wait for them to finish which can mean some very long and slow shut down times.

But don't despair we have a number of ways we can reduce the shut down time.

The very fastest way to power up and power off your pc is by using either standby or hibernate, checkout our articles on these.

If you prefer to shut down your computer totally read on.

The biggest culprit of a pc being slow to power off is the paging or page file which is used to temporarily store data when the system is not using it, but allows it to be accessed very quickly when needed, page files can be literally gigabytes in size.

When a computer is switched off, the system then deletes any information in the page file as this would be considered a security risk depending on the information you have been using, but the downside of this is, if the page file is very large this can take some time.

As long as you are happy for windows not to clear your page file on shutdown it can help to speed up shutdown problems a great deal.

To begin with open the registry editor, Start Menu, Run type Regedit and browse to the following location.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Set the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

There are of course many other causes for a computer being slow to shut down, such as..

The computer needs to be defragmented, this will also aid overallperformance.
