What’s the purpose of a CPU cooling fan ?
Why your computer needs cooling

Of course a CPU cooling fan does indeed cool the processor or CPU, but why does it need cooling?

It’s never going to burst into flames, at least none of the modern processors. The main reason for any other kind of pc cooling is simple Speed & Reliability, having a cooler pc or laptop means it run will faster, sometimes much faster.

Ever noticed that sometimes your pc gets slower as the day goes on, there are lots of contributing factors here, but they are generally caused by the processor getting too warm.

Did you know an insufficient cooling fan or system can retard the speed of your system by up to 70%, basically making your ultra fast system not quite so ultra.

Not only this, but having a system running hot most of the time does indeed reduce the life of your system, not only does it affect the processor, but inevitably heats any components around it.

But luckily today it’s easier than ever to make sure your system is kept cool, there are a multitude of CPU cooling fans with big built in heat sinks to help dissipate the heat.

If you’re looking to over clock your processor, this is even more vital, after all what’s the point in over clocking when your CPU will be generating even more heat and may actually run slower than before clocking.

With this it’s worth looking towards really beefing up the cooling, either by using one of the many bigger CPU cooling fan and heat sink combinations or by looking into a cpu water cooling kit which is the most effective way of cooling your system, much the same as your car.

If you are using a laptop it’s certainly more difficult to keep them cooler, you can’t simply replace the CPU cooling fan, but there are a few products on the market to help, such as a laptop cooling pad, these come in many different styles and types, some of them just raise your laptop away from the surface it’s resting on, others do more than this, but also have fans built into them to aid airflow.

Laptop are notorious for getting warm, very warm, but there are a few simply rules to help them to stay cool, many of these can also be applied to desktop pc’s as well.

Always make sure the room is well ventilatedOn a desktop allow ventilation at the rear of the computer, never have it pushed right against a wall.

For a laptop try to have it raised a little keeping the fan unobstructed, a laptop cooling pad is designed for this, they are cheap and definitely worth a few bucks.

If you have any USB devices plugged in, these can create an additional load on the processor, making it work harder.

Check to make sure you have no processes hogging the processor, hit the keys CTRL,ALT,Del all together, now select Task Manager, now select processes and you’ll be able to see any processes using the CPU too much, from here you can select the process and click End Process.
