Fixing a Cracked Laptop Case

Getting a cracked laptop case is easily done; after all they are for the most part very delicate machines.

Even a small drop, or as in most cases opening and closing the screen can easily cause a crack or stress fracture over a period of time.

But that said generally fixing a broken laptop case is pretty straight forward, depending on the damage it’s either a case of repairing or replacing.

Repair or Replace
The worst type of case problem is a stress fracture, this usually occurs when a load is put on the case, once a laptop case has a stress fracture it can only get bigger and can be very difficult to stop.

Most stress related cracks occur around on plastic around hinges and if this is the case no amount of super glue or resin will stop this, so in this case replacement is the best option for a permanent fix.

Resin or Flexible modelling clay can also be used, but getting a good finish is much harder.

If the laptop suffers a crack from a knock or drop this can normally be repaired by using superglue, but again if the damage is excessive or around the hinges and is likely to suffer from stress as the laptop is opened and closed then the part needs to be replaced.

Repairing a Cracked Laptop Case
When repairing a cracked laptop case I have found good old superglue gel to be the best for this, with patience you can you actually replace completely broken pieces such as screen bezels with very little signs of it ever being cracked in the first place, but this makes a very strong connection.

To do this ensure you must actually get the glue into the crack itself being careful not to get on the surface as this can permanently mark the plastic, and use sparingly otherwise too much might reach any components underneath.

Replacing Parts of a Cracked Laptop Case
How much to replace the palm rest on an Acer 5051 model laptop? How about £4.

This was the cost of brand new parts from a computer market; sites such as eBay are also great places for this kind of stuff from laptops that are being broken down for spares after motherboard failures or the like make it financially not viable to repair.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for be sure to email sellers with similar laptop parts for sale as many are actually businesses selling parts and may only advertise a small selection of what they have on offer.

The only problem with replacing parts can be the complexity of removing and refitting them, this depends on the part being replaced.

Parts such as palm rests top covers are pretty easy, but bottom and laptop covers can be much more involved.
