Create a free web site
what are the pros and cons?

In case your already off and running to find a site,

I've included a free site below, but please read the article through first though, so you don't make the same mistakes I originally made. 

But you also have to consider what you want to achieve from your website in the future.



If you are just going to put something together for fun, with no long term vision then there is no problem. Sounds like to create a free web site is for you.

But if on the other hand you are thinking about it as a long term thing, such as a niche website with a forum or maybe eventually income generating, then you have to consider certain facts. 

You will be limited in the choice of site names that you have, any site that allows you to create a free web site will not give you a domain name. 

If you do not have a domain name registered in your name then, imagine this scenario, you put two years hard work into your website, creating context, getting a lot of people involved in your forum, getting a lot of web traffic, and then the company you have your free web space with goes out of business. The problem now is you have no Domain name.

You cannot just move your site to another provider and keep the same URL , you really have to start again from scratch. On the other hand if you had bit the bullet and purchased a proper domain name with web hosting, you’d have the flexibility to just move your domain name over to another service provider,

Realistically you’re site might be down for a day.

The prices are not as expensive as you think, to get a .com domain name with 50mb of web space and email will only cost around $50.

This will be for a year, so it’s really less than $1 per week.

Or if you’re looking to get a complete solution which offers the whole ball game, then there are companies which will help you, “I’ll discuss more about these type of companies in the future”

The other thing to bear in mind which looks more professional   www.computer-adviser-afreewebsite.com or www.computer-adviser.com   the same applies for email the free providers email will probably be something like   user@afreewebsite.com and the other user@computer-adviser.com     So in a nutshell If you create a free web site for your friends and your family, and you are positive you never want it to be anything more then the free solution will probably be ok for you.

The company I’d recommend for free web space is

www.freeola.net

They give you all the usual features of the free provider, but they do have more flexibility in terms of the names and email, plus they have been around a long time, not like some of the fly by night operators.   But if you really want more then there is no question, you have to get a professional solution in place.

Even today I see small companies breaking one of the Cardinal rules of web hosting, a company with a free provider website, matched with a hotmail email address does not look professional at all.   I hope I’ve helped you to see what you are really looking for at the end of the day, the Internet can be a confusing thing at the best of times. So at least i hope now your are armed with the knowledge of create a free web site.

But even now it is still only in it’s infancy, and with the coming years two things are for sure, the Internet will still be with us and it will grow and grow and grow.
