Fixing Document Imaging Crashing From File Menu

Having problems with Microsoft Document Imaging Crashing from the File Menu?

Cause
The main reason for this is Recent Files, any files you open are remembered by Document Imaging, this then adds them to its recent files selection under the File Menu, this in itself is not a problem.

If the length exceeds the applications limitations then it prevents access to the file menu as it cannot display the filename, then causing Document Imaging crashing problems.

As to the actual maximum length of the file name its hard to guess, normally under NTFS disk formats the maximum length should be 256 characters, but this appears to be much less.

Even looking in the error report does not explain in understandable terms what has happened.

The Fix
We need to be able to remove the recent files list from Document Imagings File Menu; there are several ways of doing this.

The easiest way is to simply open 4 files from the file itself, this will then replace the recent file with the long file name causing the problem.

With the next method you’ll need to edit your Windows Registry and delete the recent files shortcut, the path is .. Remember only Delete Recent File List

Recent File List

The other way is to create a registry entry to remove the Recent File List for you.

To do this open Notepad

(Windows – Start – Run menu – type Notepad)

Now copy and paste the following two lines

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSPaper 11.0\Recent File List]

Save the file as RemoveRecent.reg making a note where it saves it to.

Now double click on the file and select Yes to add the information to the registry which will automatically remove the Recent File List.

Click ok, now check to see if Document Imaging is fixed
