Error 678 The remote computer did not respond
Error 679 The Specified destination is not reachable
Both errors are very closely related as they both suffer from the same causes
Causes
- ISP (internet service provider) problem.
- You have a phone line problem.
- Router / Modem is disabled, this can be due to.
- The LAN or Phone cable is disconnected.
- Your firewall is blocking the connection.
- The Winsock file needs to be repaired.
- A phone line does not have a line filter installed.
- The modem drivers are corrupt.
- Spyware.
- Your modem is faulty.
- Your username, password is wrong.
- Incorrect ISP or Router / Modem Configuration
Fixes
Firstly switch off your computer and router / modem for 30 seconds, power on an try again.

ISP (internet service provider) has a Problem
Check your ISP’s status, usually on their home page you’ll find a status link, if you have no other means of getting online you’ll need to phone them.
Phone Line Problem
Make sure you can make voice phone call
Router / Modem is disabled
Check to make sure the modem has Power, check the phone cable is plugged in from the wall socket to the modem, check the network cable is connected from the modem to your computer.
From Device manager is the modem recognized correctly? Routers are configured through a web browser interface so no drivers are installed.
Right Click on My Computer, Select Properties and then the Hardware tab, and Device Manager button.
Find your Modem and make sure it has no errors such as a red cross or exclamation mark.
Your firewall is blocking the connection.
Temporarily disable your firewall software to verify this is not the issue.
Remember to re-enable afterwards.
If this is the issue, you’ll need to setup a rule to allow the modem to connect to your ISP.
The Winsock file needs to be repaired.

A phone line does not have a line filter installed
All phone lines should have a line filter installed, this cuts down on other line interference.
The modem drivers are corrupt.
Download the latest router / modem drivers or run systems restore if you’ve tried everything else. For more on system restore click here.
Spyware
Spyware such as dialers are attempting to get your computer to dial another number, download anti-spyware package to check for this. Read our Anti-spyware article for more help.
Your modem / router is faulty
Modems and routers are very susceptible to static electricity and storms and many get damaged this way. The only way to verify if the modem has a fault is to test your line with another.
If your modem is USB try using another USB port
Incorrect ISP or Modem / Router Configuration
When you first ordered your broadband you will have received configuration details from your ISP this will information such as your username & password, plus the configuration of your modem or router
