Error code 7 usually occurs when a computer BIOS has a problem when ACPI is enabled.
The symptoms include the error message ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded followed by error code 7
Your computers BIOS can usually be entered by hitting the Del or F2 key on startup, this however can be other keys depending on the computers manufacturer, once in the BIOS check to see if you have the ACPI option and make sure it is enabled.

ACPI or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface is a standard that was co developed between Hewlett Packard – Intel – Microsoft and Toshiba to provide a uniform method of power management and thermal management of mobile, desktop and server platforms.

If the computer being upgraded is relatively old then the chances are it will not have ACPI, it is worth checking with the computer manufacturers support website to establish if an upgraded version of the BIOS is available.
If you are in the process of upgrading from Windows 98 or ME to XP then it would be easier to perform a clean install of XP, to do this power on the computer with Windows XP CD in the drive, hit the F12 key if the system does not boot from the CD to get a boot menu, now look at the screen and you will be prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, if this is not the case, enter the BIOS using the method above and change the boot order so the computer will attempt to boot from a CD ahead of the hard disk.
