Flash Drive Problem

Luckily a flash drive problem is a rare thing, they are about a million times more resilient than the old floppy disk, they can hold lots of data, and are so portable they can be taken just about everywhere.

It’s really not surprising they are the most common way to backup and transport data around.

How does a flash drive problem occur?

A flash drive problem can occur due to..

1. Mistreatment, I’ve had a flash drive go through a washing cycle when it was left in a pocket and it still worked, but keeping them in pockets with keys, or just removing them from a computer without getting the removal notification can not only damage data on them, but can also physically damage the flash drive itself.

2. Duplicate drive letters, one of the most common and yet easy to fix flash drive problems is the duplicate letter issue, this occurs when the flash drive attempts to use the same drive letter that’s already occupied by another drive.

To rectify this go to the Disk Management Section of Computer Management, now you will be able to see the drive, right click on it and select Change Drive Letter and select one that’s not in use by any other devices, this should remember that drive letter from now on.

3. Drive formats, Different versions of windows support different formats, for example every Windows operating system today should support NTFS and FAT32, but other formats such as ExFat are around and are not natively supported by Windows XP, some of the Mac OS formats cannot be read from Windows, you’ll just get a message advising you to format the flash drive.

For maximum compatibility FAT32 is the best choice.

4. A flash drive with a fault from the factory is rare, but it can happen especially with cheaper flash drives which may be made with cheaper components, always buy a reliable flash drive brand, it’s normally only a few bucks extra and it’s worth it for that peace of mind alone.

It’s also worth noting that flash drives do have a limited life expectancy, this is estimated to be around 5 years, but no one really seems to know.

If you have a flash drive problem and cannot read the data no matter what it’s worth downloading one of many flash drive recovery programs, it may not be able to fix the fault with the drive itself, but it might help you to recover your data, the best recover programs are not free, but you can download a trial version to check what can and cannot be recovered.

If I ever encounter a flash drive issue, the very first thing I do is to format the drive.

It’s preferable to not use the quick format option as this may not fix the problem itself.
