Never click on your own PPC ads, this is called click fraud, doing this will get you banned very quickly.
Although there is very little in the way of direct good alternatives to Google Adsense the one way that seems to work very well is mixing revenue streams, by this I mean have say a PPC ad at the top of the page and a sales based ad a few lines beneath this and then have another PPC ad a few lines under this, if your article is large consider breaking it down or ad another ad type, but try not to make the page look too busy in terms of ads.
