How to Configure POP3 and
Hotmail Email Through Outlook Express
Hotmail email
In terms of e-mail there are two common types that we are going
to cover, the first is webmail and the second is POP3.
Webmail
Hotmail is the most common type of webmail, but there are lots
more such as Fastmail or Netscape, but there are thousands of
providers around,
Although you can add
hotmail email to Outlook express, it is still webmail and has to
be setup as HTTP, read further on how to access both POP3 and
HTTP mail through Outlook Express
The first thing you
need to do is to setup an email account, most Internet service
providers today offer some kind of email address when you sign
up with them.
Otherwise select
from one of the two below if your looking to setup / create
email address both of these are web mail pop3 free accounts, for
an MSN Hotmail email account visit www.hotmail.com or simply
search for free pop3 account using google, there will be
lots to choose from.
Signing up to MSN now
enables you to create your very own favorites page which is very
useful.
Ok now you've got an email address with configuration info see
the list below
One of the advantages
that webmail generally has over POP3 email is the fact that you
can easily access your email from any computer with an Internet
connection.
Generally though the
provider will limit the amount of space allocated to you, and if
you let this build up then usually your email mailbox will be
locked and you will not be able to receive any email until you
free up some space.
The second type of
email is the POP3 account, this can be configured through such
programs as Outlook Express, Outlook, Eurdora, Netscape
If you have a
Macintosh then Entourage or Mail, the look of the email programs
are different although they all accept the same server and login
types for example.
POP3 Email
To setup a general POP3
email account through a mail program, you need to know the
following
The username of
the email account
The Password of the email account
The name of the incoming POP3 server, the email provider will be
able to give you this.
The name of the
outgoing SMTP server, this is used when you send an email, your
Internet service provider, such as AT&T or BT, Freeserve,
whoever you have your internet account with will provide you
with an SMTP server address, so it will generally look something
like this, I’ve used Outlook express as it’s the most common
e-mail program among home users
Launch Outlook Express and it should ask you to setup an email
account if you've never used it before, otherwise it will take
you to the screen above.
Now you need to go to the tools menu, now select account and you
will see the screen above, click add , you will get a small
popup menu, with 3 choices, choose mail
ok here we just need to name the email account, this is just for
your reference so call it something that signifies the provider
and the email address I normally just put the email
address
Enter the email address you got from your supplier, or you setup
from above create email address this will be either a POP3
address or Hotmail email address
OK here we need to enter the type of email account you have , it
will be either POP3 or if you have Hotmail email use HTTP, if
you enter HTTP you do not need to enter the POP3 or SMTP server
details
Now enter the username and password and you should be finished
OK we have a
few more options to play with now
You have a choice to
leave messages on the server or download them all to your
computer, if you also use your mail on another computer then you
might want to implement a change here. Please note this does not
apply for hotmail email only POP3
Go back to the tools menu, select accounts,
Select the mail tab, highlight the account name you just setup
and select properties
OK you'll nave have the left picture on your screen, click the
advanced tab to bring up the other screen, down the bottom
you'll see a sub heading labelled Delivery
This is very
important at present , the default will be to remove any
messages from your providers email server, like I said above if
you need to access your email from another computer, or via web
mail ,
check the box
Leave a copy of messages on server to set the amount of
days would be a good thing to do as well, if you don't specify
remove from server after XX Days
You will fill up your
mail box on your providers server and won't be too popular,
So set it to
something around a couple of weeks or a month, but this really
depends on how much email we get.
Web mail pop3 free
It's also worth noting that when you download emails to your
computer, the providers restrictions do not apply, all emails
will then be held on your computer, so the only restriction will
be the amount of hard disk space. Now you'll be able to add
hotmail email and pop3 email
