Hotmail Outlook Express Problem The End of an Era? Windows Live Mail

New Page 1

Recently got a Hotmail Outlook Express problem ? OE has been with us almost from the earliest versions of Windows, but as from the 30th of June 2008 it will no longer offer support for Hotmail accounts, this was a great feature.

But Don't Despair

As we move into the Live era as part of Microsoft’s move from Outlook Express they have now given us Windows Live Mail which will offer Hotmail support.

The reason for the switchover is a direct upgrade of the mail protocol DAV to Deltasync which manages large mail boxes better than the earlier DAV. This all makes sense as mail providers are always increasing there mail box size limits.
Just in the last year alone the average mail box size has pretty much doubled due to these larger limits, as users now don’t have to clear mail boxes as frequently.

Included as standard with Windows Live Mail we now have

Unified Email Accounts
Sure even Outlook Express could offer multiple email account support, but with Windows Live Mail unified accounts there is now support for G-Mail and Yahoo accounts, plus messenger conversations can now be started directly from Windows Live Mail

Photo Email

send thumbnails rather than large mailbox clogging photos, the recipiant simply clicks on this to download the whole image, a very useful feature especially if you like to send larger files, beyond the send or receive limitations of many providers.

RSS Really Simply Syndication
Finally we have RSS added, it was never officially added to OE which was a shame, but better late than never though.

Of course not everyone will appreciate the forced change of mail clients, most people simply do not like change, this is magnified when it comes to software, after all it takes a while to get used to a software package and then you have to learn another one.
Luckily on the surface Windows Live Mail does not actually look a great deal different to Outlook Express, indeed even adding new accounts is the same, it also gives us an easy hassle free migration when upgrading to Windows Live Mail, simply install, follow the prompts and let it do its thing.

So before you pass judgement checkout Windows Live Mail, like OE before it is still free, but does offer a number of improvements.

Gripes

It would have been nice to see a calendar added, but I guess this may actually cause people to stop purchasing the full blown version of Outlook.

It’s kinda sad seeing our old friend OE moving onto the software scrapheap, but it will always have a place in history.
