I have a new Apple MacBook pro laptop MC 700LL/A which is a really nice computer, but how long should I charge laptop battery for the first time, can i cause any damage if i charge it too much, or reduce its battery life if i under charge it, please excuse the naivety of the question, this is my first laptop and the cost of new batteries seems to be very expensive, any help would be extremely appreciated.

Just leave it plugged into the mains it wont over charge, you’ll be able to see when its fully charged.
You cannot over charge the battery, you can leave it plugged in.
I just run it on the mains power whenever possible, but you should be able to see from the battery icon when it reaches 100% (different laptop batteries requires different charging times)
