How to connect DVD writer from my desktop computer to my laptop? Do i have to buy a new one? As the one in the desktop is pretty new and the desktop is being broken for spares it seems a shame to throw it away.

you need to purchase an external USB caddy with either PATA or IDE drive connection, depending on drives interface.
