How to reinstall Windows XP Clean Install or Repair ?

Before thinking about how to reinstall Windows XP there are a few points to consider,

1. There are a number of ways to reinstall Windows XP, we have the clean install of Windows XP, this is considered by many, myself included as a last resort, as the time it takes to get your pc back to the way we like it can take weeks, this method will completely wipe your C drive or first hard drive partition if you have more than one, find out more..

When reinstalling Windows XP we can also perform what’s called a repair, this in effect will only repair the operating system leaving files and most applications untouched, after a repair however you will need to repatch your computer with all Microsoft updates from the date the installation disk was created. Prefer to go the repair route? Find out more here.

2. Do you really need to reinstall Windows XP ?, did you know most Windows reinstallations are unnecessary ? Simply by running a few of the Windows repair tools such as a scandisk to repair errors, followed by a disk clean up, to clear space used by such things as files in the waste basket, unused and temporary files, and then a defrag to clean up the disk and basically make files contiguous, and finally cleaning up the registry using a free application such as regclean can make a world of difference to how your computer is running.

If your computer has just start misbehaving maybe the way forward is a system restore? This will enable you to restore your computer back to a previous configuration in a very short space of time.

3. Do you need to backup any other data this can include, files, internet favourites, settings for networks or windows, a simple way to make sure you have found all needed files is to simply search for file types, checkout our file search page.

Make a note, download and backup any drivers such as graphics or network card. Reinstalling Windows XP and then finding it does not have your network card built in can be a real headache especially if you have no other way of connecting to the internet.
