Image hard drive , piece of mind. Having a complete hard drive backup of your computer, this includes the operating system, applications, settings, files , pretty much the whole ball game , so if the worst does happen, imagine being able to restore your whole computer in less than an hour.

For us to be able to do this there are a couple of factors to consider, firstly the software needed to backup.   Secondly where abouts are we going to be backing up to   And lastly how can we put all this together   There are a number of software packages on the market that enable us to backup or image hard drive , one of the best around is Drive Image by r-tools technology .

It enables you to image hard drive from the active operating system, unlike some other software packages where you cannot image or backup an active system and will have to boot from another device.

Where abouts are we going to backup to ? Well to begin with you create a single image hard drive file of your operating system   Note – you can save a lot of space if you firstly clean up your disk, read our

“ cleaning hard drive hints and tips “ guide on this ,  also disable your page file before you create the file. Remember to re-enable it once you have finished creating your image , also remember you will have to enable it on image if you ever need to restore.   This could save you up to a gig or more in image size so it’s definitely worth it.   Then after seeing the size of the file, you can decide the best place to backup to, the image / backup will be a single file so this can quite literally be copied.

Generally the size of an image will be over a few gigs so , a normal CD copier will be of no use, a single layer DVD writer will enable you to backup about 4.7gb,

But if this is too small you really need to look into other backup mediums, firstly we have a Dual layer DVD Writer , another good device would be an external hard drive.   If you need any help looking for the right backup hardware, checkout our hardware backup device section , where we help decide the right device for you.
