Ever placed images in Word documents and then not been able to see the images, or maybe your just reading a document created by someone else and the same thing occurs.
The problem can affect Microsoft Word versions 97 – 2000 – 2002 or XP – 2003 and 2007.
The reason this occurs is due to Microsoft’s layered approach to documents, each document consists of 3 layers,
The text layer, the header/footer layer and the drawing layer that contains the graphics.
Change the page view to Print Layout View (this is the small selection of screen settings at the bottom of the main word screen, hovering the cursor over them will show which view they represent)
Make Sure Drawing is Ticked

Tools Menu – Options – View tab – under print and web layout options make sure Drawings is ticked.
Word 2007
Home button – Word Options – Advanced – scroll down to Show Document Content – Show drawing and text boxes on screen
Make sure Place Holders is not ticked – as a default picture place holders forces Word to show an empty box in place of each graphic within the document to help improve the scrolling performance.

Optimizing Images
Once your images are showing within Word documents, it is definitely worth making sure that any images are optimised for the document.
Images which are large make the overall size of the document large, which can give problems making the document very slow to open and email.
Make sure any inserted image is using a compressed format such as JPG or JPEG, rather than BMP or Bitmap which offers no image compression meaning a BMP image will probably be around 10 times the size of an identical image saved as a JPG file.
