If Your iPod Cannot Connect to Wireless Networks Read on

If you find your iPod cannot connect to wireless networks you are not alone, there seems to be lots of iPhone and iPod wifi issues around at the moment.

the majority of the problems seem to affect the iPod 2g or 2nd generation running firmware 2.2.1

After experiencing the issue myself I decided to put together a list of possible fixes as there does not seem to be a single way of resolving this making it very hard to pinpoint.

The most bizarre thing is my iPod will connect to one wireless network without a problem, and will consistently fail to connect to another, and then will totally fail to connect to another network, all of which are running the same network security authentication, this seems to be the case with many iPod connection issues.

These symptoms include

Cannot connect to WEP protected networks, but can connect to WPA
The opposite, can connect to WEP, but cannot connect to WPA
Cannot connect to either.
Can connect to the wireless network but still cannot browse.

iPod cannot connect to wireless network resolutions and fixes

If you have not done so already, make sure you have reset your iPod and router, also make sure other devices can connect to your router and browse the web.

If your router has mac address authentication enabled ensure you add your iPods mac address to the access list.

Reset your iPods network settings from Settings – General – Reset – Reset network settings, this will just erase any network settings not another other data.

Connect manually to your wireless network – Enter the network name and wifi key

Attempt to connect to another wireless network even if you have no access and then when it fails connects to yours, this seems to reset some of the network preferences.

One other thing we found to work is to add the network credentials manually select any network security type WPA or WEP, then try to connect when this fails then choose the other type regardless of whether your network is WEP or WPA encrypted and try the connection again. I’m not sure why this works, but it is almost as though the iPod cannot determine the correct network security type. This was the method that worked for me, although every so often it will fail to connect again, but by re-entering the WEP key and selecting WEP and then WPA it will connect again.

The last method I have found to work is to use a third party piece of software called WiFinder , but this does mean getting your iPod to connect to the internet somehow, but this does give more information on the type of network security, signal strength etc.

Notes

So on the whole many of the fixes provided here could be considered workarounds. As we find new information, in particularly a definitive fix which will probably be in the shape of the next firmware update we will add this to the article.
