Is your laptop resetting constantly?
Read on for causes on this and laptop crashing
Software Problems
Most Laptop resetting and crashing is down to software issues, this usually involves some type of malware or software upgrade.
Make sure you have Antivirus and Anti-malware installed and both are kept up to date.
Drivers/software updates – If your laptop has had software or drivers upgraded before the problem started occurring make sure it’s compatible with your system, the easiest way to fix this is a Windows system restore rolling back to the date it was last working ok.
Disk & Windows Problems – Run a thorough chkdsk (this will check the integrity of the Windows installation, it may take a while to run, but will flag any errors for you to see and will hopefully fix them too) As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to run a chkdsk and defragment every so often to prevent many computer issues and keep it running well.
Hardware Problems
Battery overheating – this occurs when the battery has an issue such as internal connections, or is not holding a charge properly, its worth noting that even if your laptop is plugged into the mains supply a problem battery can still cause problems.
If it is a battery problem causing the issue usually the only option is to replace the battery.
Processor overheating – this is more common on older laptops as unlike newer processors which actually throttle back performance to reduce heat, older types may get hotter and hotter. (Search and download one of the many free processor temperature monitors so confirm if this is the problem)
Once you have ascertained that the processor is indeed overheating we need to find the reason why.
Check all vents – make sure that they are free of dust and see if you can feel the air from the processors fan, if you can’t then the fan may not be spinning and needs to be looked at to find out if its just needs cleaning if its gummed up with dust etc, or if it needs to be replaced if the fan motor has failed.
The last check is to make sure the thermal paste between the laptop and heatsink is ok, if not it needs to be removed and replaced.
If you go to this level its also worth just opening the closing the processors locking bar, this will renew the connection from the socket to the processor.
Faulty power adapter, with a break in the cable, this can either be at the laptop or mains plug end, so check carefully.
Problems can also occur when the actual mains adapter develops a fault and cannot provide sufficient power to the laptop.
This type of issue is easy to spot as you will see the laptop keep changing from mains to battery power in the system tray on the bottom right of the Windows desktop.
Connections Metal connections can tarnish overtime leading to a less than efficient contact causing laptop resetting issues, by reseating the following connections it should create a better connection and in many cases will fix the issue.
- The RAM
- Hard drive
- Processor
- Connections from Keyboard and Palm rest
- CD/DVD Drive
