Limited or no Connectivity Fixes Guide

Are you getting a limited or no connectivity error message when you try to connect to a network?

Have you tried repairing the network connection? To do this right click on it and select repair.

The limited network connection prompt means there is connectivity between your computer and your network router, but something is not handshaking properly.

Do any other computers connect to your router? And do they still connect ok?

Having other computers that connect to your router lets us know where the problem lies, so if any other computer can connect, then this points towards a problem with your computer, but if any other computer cannot connect this means a router issue.

The easiest way to fix a router issue is of course just powering it off for about 30 seconds.

Have you connected to this particular network before?

If not does the router have any security in place such as MAC Address authentication? This type of security allows any computer to connect to the router, but then gives a limited or no connectivity error message.

To resolve this problem you need someone to log into the routers admin console look for the security section and add your laptops MAC or network address to the access list.

You can obtain the MAC address of your computer by going to the command prompt and typing IPCONFIG /ALL then look for your network adapter you are trying to connect using, and make a note of its MAC address and enter into the router access list.

If you have connected before has anything changed on your computer?

Has anything been installed upgraded, removed or deleted from your computer, the usual culprits include new firewall software preventing allocation of an IP address or upgraded network card drivers.

Firstly try to disable your firewall software and then try connecting again, if the problem turns out to be your firewall you will either have to enable it to accept DHCP or use other firewall software.

The other two ways to resolve limited or no connectivity issues include.

Reinstalling the network card
Go to device manager, (right click on Computer or My Computer select properties and then Hardware or device management tab.

Now look for the network card you are trying to connect with, right click on this and select Uninstall, once uninstalled right click on Computer or My Computer at the top and scan for new hardware, this will then find and reinstall the network card.

Note - if you have a wireless card and your network has security you will need to re-enter your security code.

System Restore
A windows system restore will enable you to set your computer back to the way it was in the past, you just need to choose a date just before the limited or no connectivity problem begun, you will lose any applications or changes made to your computer after this time, but any files made during this time will be ok.

This could be considered overkill but the main thing is it's usually a quick and easy way to fix many problems similar to limited or no connectivity issues

This will hopefully have the effect of also putting your network card back to the way it was when it last connected.
