Look at the specs not the name
Don’t get taken in by all the hype or a brand name, after all a similar spec Acer laptop will be every bit as quick as it’s Sony equivalent, the same goes for the latest generation of processors, sure a dual core processor will be faster than a single core such as a Pentium M, but not by as much as many people think, the speed of a laptop comes down to more than just the processor speed.

Generally there is always a really big gap between today’s technology and yesterdays in terms of price, but does the extra performance justify the significant extra cost? I’m sure that some people will disagree, but to me no, buying a laptop that is one generation older may not be that much slower and is an easy way to purchase low priced laptop computers

What do you really need on your laptop ?
Decide before hand what you really do need on your laptop, such as DVD writer, screen size, RAM, Hard drive, graphics spec, and then stick to your guns, and don’t let a sales person sell you some overpriced machine, that will suit your needs no better than a cheaper model.

Processors
Ok Intel do have the majority of the processor market, but this does not mean they are the best, how about AMD, their processors are on par with their Intel equivalents, but only cheaper, so this makes it a really viable alternative

Laptop prices are really now at a level where they can be a viable alternative to a desktop computer in terms of cost, having a look around the web and comparing the prices, checking out special offers in places such as Pc World will amaze you at just what you can get for your hard earned bucks.

Don’t forget checkout the auction websites, but don’t automatically presume it will be cheaper, it’s a common misconception with auction websites that products are always cheaper, but this is not the case, very often items sell for more than a retail price.
