Mac or pc What’s Right For You!!
The Mac or pc argument has been going on for what seems like
forever and it probably will go on well into the future.
My background
I have been a Mac support consultant for over 10 years and a pc
support consultant for over 15, and have learnt a few things
during this time, I would just like to clarify that I am not pro
or against Mac or pc and any opinions are my own.
It’s fair to assume that current pc operating systems owe a lot
to Apple up until a few years ago each incarnation of windows
became closer to Macs operating system.
Today the major differences in what one system can do and
another can’t is rare.
Regardless
One of the major differences encountered, are the people who use
them, pc users pretty much don’t care what they use to get the
job done, you could probably swap their computer for a Mac
overnight and as long as they can access e-mail and the web they
probably would not complain too much.
A
die hard Mac user on the other hand, will use nothing but a Mac,
I even remember a whole production department threatening to
walk out when management told them they were being migrated to
pc’s, (they were all for this though once they were told they
would be given their Macs as a good will gesture)
Legends
It’s funny how once true facts have become legends
Macs are better for graphic work
– this used to be the case, but now as both platforms are pretty
much equal hardware wise and the same software is available for
both, one is no better than the other.
Cost
Macs cost much more, there is no denying Mac’s do
cost more, but it’s not twice as much, after all you can’t
compare a mid range branded pc to a higher end Mac, side by side
a high spec branded pc will not be so far behind a Mac in price.
But to be
fair to pc's they do have a big price advantage in the unbranded
market.
Ease of use
Mac’s are easier to use, well they are if your
already used to them, it’s a bit like horses for courses, if
your used to Mac’s of course they will be easier, if your used
to pc’s XP then it will be easier, remember the transition from
XP to Vista, we all get to grips with XP and along comes Vista.
For a complete newbie it used to be the case Mac’s were
easier to use, but pc’s have come such a long way over a short
space of time, Macintosh found its way earlier so have had to
make less changes, and both systems are very polished, but due
to the simplistic way Vista works a pc operating system makes
more sense.
Software
Of course pc’s have many more software packages available, but
what’s really important is, is the software that you require
available?
Games
This is one area where the pc has really gone from strength to
strength; it’s not due to any limited graphics power of Macs,
but more down to Macs still being a niche market and not really
thought of as a games machine so many developers do not see a
games market for them.
Performance
The earlier Macs were hyped to be more powerful than the later
generation of Intel P4’s however this proved to be a bit
misleading and indeed many Mac users did acknowledge that the G4
processor range was lacking compared to the P4, but currently as
both platforms now use Intel processors there is not a great
deal of difference here.
Reliability
Macs have a better track record when it comes to stability, due
to the OS being based on Unix, in addition to this as many pc
users have found out having the most common operating system is
not always a plus, as Windows is way ahead with the amount of
virus’s written for it.
Style
Macs have always been a bit of a style icon, not just the name,
but due to the sleek elegant look of them, but it has not taken
the pc market very long to catch onto this and now if a
manufacturer does not make their pc’s sleek and elegant they
simply do not sell, or for as much.

Conclusion
As you can see there really is not a lot to choose between a
similar Mac or pc , they both have pluses and minus’s
Pc’s are more diverse, they can do
everything a Mac can do with a much larger game choice
Mac’s still have the edge when it comes to style and elegance
If your in two minds about a Mac or Pc , think about the
following.
If your looking for a gaming platform go pc, If you are already
a Mac user stick with Macs, the same goes for being a pc user.
If you are new to the world of computers the better platform
would be a pc, this is due to being slightly easier to use for
newbies, plus it's easier to get support, most people have a
local pc shop or a friend or family member who’s the resident pc
expert
