Making money working from home is the dream or goal of lots of people, and sadly many people do get put off after being steered in the wrong direction by many companies and individuals offering overnight success.

I see lots of adverts in regard to making lots of money working from home , but if you see an advert along the lines of – make $3000 in one hour – how likely is this to be the truth? After all if someone could make this amount of money every hour, why would anyone sell the idea for a few dollars, would you?

That aside, there are ways of making money working from home on a computer, there are two directions you can follow here you can either work for someone or work for yourself.

Working for someone
If you choose to work for someone else this could be considered the safe way of making money working from home , but the amount you will be paid is of course proportional to the skills you have, many companies now; in particular many local government authorities in the UK have an initiative to get more people working from home, one such local council I worked for were estimating that 40% of their work force would be able to work from home by the year 2012.

Working for yourself
To many people myself included the whole purpose of working for myself is total freedom, to escape the rat race and be my own boss.

The best and worst things about starting to work for yourself is the first few years, if you are in the fortunate position to give up working during that time and not have to worry about finances then that is great, but if like most you still need to maintain a primary income it can mean working almost 2 jobs until your home business is making enough money to support you.

I spoke recently to a guy who ran an internet cafe and was dissatisfied because he had large amounts of time in the day when he had nothing to do, and was bored and looking for another job, this would be a golden opportunity for someone looking to build an an online business while maintaining their usual income.

Many people use a work slide rule to gradually work less in their usual job and more on the home business as the revenue increases, for example

While your home business earns zero you maintain working full time in your usual job.
When your home business earns 20% then you cut down to 4 days per week in you usual job.

40% = 3 days, 60% = 2 days and so on, working this way enables you to put much more time into your home business, thus helping it to grow much quicker, when you get to this stage one of the pit falls that’s easy to fall into is to keep working in your normal position and still earn from your home business, this is fine if you intended to do this all along, but this can be a false economy; If you really have faith in your home business there is no reason why it will not be earning much more in the near future if you put the extra time into it.

Of course there are thousands of very good ideas for making money working from home, these can be divided into 3 categories

Information
Perhaps the most attractive way of earning money working from home is to provide information and get paid for providing advertising with it, in effect giving you a silent 24x7 income.

For example create a website on your favourite subject (just make sure its not too competitive) so if we chose cats, but found it to be too competitive, we then niche this and choose kittens as it is no where near as competitive, but still has good potential, so we build an information website around kittens from scratch or using a product such as SiteBuild It, (if we have very little web building experience). Now try to write one or more good pages of content every day, each around 600 to 800 words.
Setup accounts with companies such as Google, Amazon, Ebay and add their advertising to each page

Google Adsense – Your select the advert type, they provide the code which you add to your web pages or pages, this then automatically selects ads which are inline with the content of the page, and then you get paid if someone clicks on the ad
Amazon Affiliates – You select the product, Amazon then provide the code and you get paid if anyone goes to Amazon and purchases anything
eBay partners – Same as Amazon you get paid if anyone purchases anything after going to eBay from your websites eBay link

A Physical Service
Something along the lines of a home computer repair business, home cleaning. Its nice to be able to work your own hours, the only downside is it can be hard to fit in this type of business if you are working a full time job, another downside is if you take time off, you do not earn any money, so you do not get paid anything.

Selling a Product
deciding on a product and selling it can be very lucrative way of making money working from home if you get it right, there are so many ways to get people to your website, such as Google Adwords, Amazon, eBay, plus of course organic traffic, and there are lots of ways to promote a site, I know people who are doing very well at this.

Whatever you choose to do, it is not going to be quick, and there are of course lots of get rich quick schemes around, which may earn you a few dollars today if you are lucky!!

It will take time and effort, but this is a good thing as it simply means 99.9% of the population will never do what you are about to do and reap the rewards.

Choose something that really interests and fascinates you, the journey will be enjoyable and this will also be highlighted in what you offer.

Above all take the opportunity and make this happen for yourself today, not next year, having your own business not only provides you with an income, it also provides you with a going concern and an investment which could be worth a few dollars to begin with, to millions in the future.

The hardest part is starting, after this always do at least one thing per day towards your goal and you will be a step nearer.
