How to Manually Install iPhone Applications (works for iTouch to)

It’s great to manually install iPhone applications
it makes it so much easier

Your not just limited to what’s available within the App Store.

If you want to manually install iPhone applications its actually very straight forward, perhaps the hardest part is the prerequisites.

Firstly you need to make sure your iPhone or iTouch is jail broken (YouTube has some good videos on how to do this)

Once you have a jail broken device you need to install an application called Installous onto it, you can install this from Cydia (which you should be able to see on your device once its jail broken)

Next you need an application to browse your iPhone or iPod from your computer, iPhoneBrowser works well for this, plus it’s free. (If using XP make sure you don’t use version 1.9.1.0 or this may cause constant crashes, try 1.9.3.0 which is currently in beta, but this seems to be much more stable)

Now connect your device to your computer via its cable

If iTunes launches close this down and run iPhoneBrowser

You should now see a directory tree of your iPhone or iPod

Browse to Var/Mobile/Library/Downloads

This is the downloads repository for Installous where is stores a copy of all uninstalled applications

Once you have your IPA or installation file you want to install you just need to drag it from your computer to the above location in iPhonebrowser.

Once you have done this disconnect your device from your computer and then launch Installous on your device, select the Downloads tab – find your installation file and select it – wait a few seconds and it should now be installed.

Well done, that’s it you can now manually install iPhone applications

Notes
One really good thing about using iPhoneBrowser is the ability to backup any IPA files as well, its just a case of right clicking and selecting Backup or SaveAs, if you want to see your backed up files – Functions Menu – view Back up Files

Just to reiterate, I personally found iPhone browser 1.9.1.0 crashes in XP constantly, but 1.9.3.0 works ok

When you have iPhoneBrowser open don’t attempt to scroll through the menu’s too fast, other wise it appears the data transfer between the device and pc cannot keep up and the application may crash

And finally remember, please pay for software you use; many developers operate on a shoe string budget and get very little financial reward for their efforts.

Hi there! I tried to install an app following your instructions, but despite several attempts to put an ipa file into the folder you suggest, it would never appear in the Downloads section of Installous. I checked around for other guides, and found one that offered a different location; when I put the app there everything worked as you describe. The location is: /private/var/mobile/Documents/Installous/Downloads. I don’t know if there have been changes to Installous or iPhonebrowser or what, but I just thought I’d let you know in case you’d like to update your info. Thanks!
