The MSOCache Guide

The MSOCache where does it come from? Why is it needed? Where can I find it? And how can I use it?

Where does it come from?
The MSOCache or Microsoft Office Cache (using its full name) gets created on your computer when you install Microsoft Office. On Office 2003 it weighs in at a pretty hefty 315mb, it only gets created if the hard drive you are installing Ms Office onto has 1.5gb or more of space or the drive itself is a fixed disk such as a hard drive, and not removable.

Why is it Needed?
As the MSOCache is basically a setup of Office files if you choose to make any changes to your MS Office such as adding more programs, components or repairing it then this can call be done from the Microsoft Office Cache location without the need for the Office CD/DVD.

If you’re really short on disk space you can remove the MSOCache directory and then simply use the Office CD or DVD if you ever make any changes to your Office installation.

You can also use the LisTool.exe to selectively delete things from it rather than removing the whole thing.

If you choose to remove the Microsoft Office Cache file make sure you do it’s properly, don’t just delete the file.

The correct way to do this is to go to computer or my computer – Right click on the C drive or where MSOCache is stored – Properties – Under the general tab select Disk Cleanup – let it do its thing for a minute or so and than under the Cleanup options select the Office Setup Files and click ok to remove them.

How to remove Microsoft Office Cache files

Where can I find the Microsoft Office Cache Location?
Look in the root of any drive that Office was installed on for example its usually C so it will be C:\MSOCache (remember do not delete the directory from here)

Notes
Personally I have never had a need for Office to use the MSOCache so to me over 300mb of install files just sitting there is a waste, if I ever do need the files I can simply just use the Office installation disk.

When you install Office after the installation finishes you will be asked if you want to keep the MSOCache .

If you don’t wish to you can either choose not to keep them or if unsure by all means allow the installation to leave them as you can always remove them at a later date as above.
