The first portable computer to be considered the first laptop by many was the Osbourne 1 which was on the market in 1981, it cost $1700 and weighed in at a back breaking 24 pounds, it had a five inch screen, no hard drive only 2 x 5.25” floppy drives. Although this was the fore runner of the modern day laptop, sadly the company was never successful.

Sub note books are the latest editions to the portable range, and the size of these is more inclined to be called pocket pc’s, many of these double up as mobile phones, with each range getting more and more power and storage space, they have already eclipsed the power of full blown desktops that were current machines not so many years ago.

The purpose of a laptop was to be able to make a device that was able to do everything that a desktop computer could do, and be portable, the first laptops were very limited in many respects, and they had a number of issues such as very short battery life, very underpowered, plus quite bulky and heavy to be carrying around.

Later models have come a long way over a very short period of time, and this has helped to make laptop prices available to pretty much everyone, new laptops include better battery life, much lighter, custom mobile processors which operate at lower temperatures, and even touch screens on tablet models.

So in general the future really looks rosy for the laptop, some models can be considered as true desktop replacements, it’s always been an issue to find a laptop as powerful as the latest desktop computer, in terms of processor, hard drive speed and size, and graphic capabilities, but many companies now provide laptops which are almost on par. Look around and you will see many specifically designed laptops, for gaming, design, browsing/word processing and of course style.

In the future it’s expected that home users will actually purchase more laptops that desktops due to the versatility and cheaper laptop prices on offer, after all how easy is it to browse the internet on a desktop computer from your garden or garage?

The only real downside to having a laptop comes from its greatest advantage, being small and portable makes it an ideal target to be stolen, but even now items such as laptop alarms, restraint cables are available to help stop this.

Common misconceptions about laptops

I need a larger screen – All laptops come with a VGA port so you can plug in and external monitor, if using windows XP or Vista you can even have a dual screen setup from your laptop and external monitor.

Laptops are not as powerful as desktops – Well yes and no of course if you talking about the latest and greatest maybe not, but manufacturers such as Alienware come very close.

I need high spec graphics – Again gaming laptops go a long way towards this with some of the very latest graphics cards built in.

I prefer a proper mouse and keyboard – All laptops will accept external mice and keyboards.
