Safe Internet Browsing Tips

Safe Internet Browsing Tips, Is it possible to make a computer 100 percent secure when browsing the web or downloading emails?
Probably not, but by applying a little bit of time and some smart browsing habits we can certainly come close.

The main risks associated with the internet are viruses, spyware and hackers. They generally reach us generally via 3 methods, an email with a malicious attachment, files downloaded with another file attached, or by someone remotely connecting to our computers.

To begin with much of this is very easy to prevent as long as you have.
Internet Firewall, this helps prevent unwanted connections to your pc, Windows XP service pack 2 and Vista come with pretty good firewall software built in.

Antivirus software, viruses are the scourge of the internet and there are literally many hundreds or thousands around.
A computer virus is simply a piece of code that has actually been written by someone.
A good antivirus package is critical to the well being of your computer, packages such as Mcafee or if you want free antivirus applications checkout Avast or Avg.

Spyware much like a virus spyware is written by an individual, most spyware is more of an annoyance as it generates annoying pop-ups or slows your pc down as it monitors your browsing habits.

I did say most spyware is harmless, but there is other spyware is more malicious, for example one particular kind is the key logger which attempts to log all of your key strokes, the file is then uploaded and someone will examine the results hoping to find certain information such as bank details.
This is why we need antispyware software, many good packages are free such as spybot search and destroy adaware and now Google even offers a free one.

Once you have your pc protection in place you now need to learn smart browsing habits, this really just comes down to common sense.

If you choose to simply just make your computer as safe as possible or you perform internet banking or other personal data sites you really need to.

Make sure anyone who uses your computer only browses reputable web sites, sites such as porn, software serial numbers abound with web nasties.

Never use peer to peer networks such as kazaa or torrents, again many of these sites are a big source of web nasties which is why many people choose not to use them.

When you receive emails never open attachments from addresses you don't recognize, even if you recognize the sender exercise caution as it’s easy to send on viruses without even knowing it if your pc is not protected.

If you receive an email with a URL or web link never click on it, email scams have become increasingly more popular and cunning, if you receive an email from your bank, eBay, the lottery never login to your account from the link in the email, it may be a real email, but many are just trying to get you to login to a false site which looks like a bank or eBay account, but is just a façade or fake site to get your personal details.

If you wish to use peer 2 peer networks it’s better to have a separate pc solely for this and general browsing.
