Search Hard drive , How to find any files on your hard drive with ease

Search hard drive In case your not sure where the search function is, Click on the windows start menu on the bottom right of the screen, you should see the search button,

Search hard drive

Now you will have a list of search functions,

pictures music or video

Documents "this will only search for text type documents such as letters, spreadsheets"

All files and folders " searches everywhere "

Computer and people " searches for people on the internet or in your address book "

The search that gives us the most flexibility with the most accurate results is the "All File and Folders Search"

So if we select this , as a default the search will select all local hard drives , so if we leave this selected

I'm not sure about you , but if I had a file that was written over a year ago I would probably not remember

where I put it,

when I created it exactly

or what it was actually called

so we can do the following.

we have what is a called a wild card character * it's really just the asterisk or multiplication sign that you can get from the number pad or by shift & 8 keys

If we search under *.jpg this will find all files for us with a jpg extension

if you were looking for word documents you would enter *.doc

if you cannot remember the file type you could move the wild card around like so

windows.*

this would find all files called windows regardless of what the extension was

the last kind of search we can do is a bit search you could search under

window*.* this would find any file labelled window anything.anything

*windows.* this would find any file labelled anything window.anything

I'm sure you get the idea by now, have a play around , the asterisk gives you really powerful searches

ready for something else
