Implementing smart website advertising to Maximize Your Websites Revenue

Smart website advertising is a win win situation for both the advertiser and the publisher.

Google have been quick to adapt a smart marketing approach for their Adwords advertisers called Smart Pricing which saves them money by penalising websites running Google Adsense whose actual sales conversion for the ads is low compared to the CTR or click through rate.

This could be viewed as a bad thing for publishers, but remember as long as your content on your website is good there should be no problem, and after all if it was not for the advertisers there would be no Google Adsense.

There is a downside to this though, you could have a great site, superb content, you could have a very good click through rate, but the advertiser could get very little actual sales simply down to their sales page, of course they could easily end up losing money, but at the same time your webpage could be penalised via smart pricing.

The bottom line of Smart website advertising comes down to one thing maximising your websites revenue generating capabilities, to do this we need some type of stats in place so we can see how well pages and ads on pages are or are not performing, just about every advertiser gives you this facility so you should use it.

The types of advertising available are pay per click such as Google Adsense and % per sale such as Amazon, eBay partners or the other million affiliate schemes; each has its good and bad points but you really need to analyse one against the other to see what works for your smart advertising project

This is generally pretty easy to work out for example

Say we get 100 clicks on Adsense and earn $20 this means that the price per click is 20 cents, but if we chose to replace this with Our favourite affiliate program which gives 4% per sale and the average sale is $40 it means we will earn $1.60.

This then means it would take 16 clicks on Adsense to generate the same money, you also have to take into account that most affiliate programs also give us cookie time, which means if someone goes to the affiliates website and does or does not purchase something there will be a cookie places on there computer for 30 days, this means if they purchase anything during this time you will still get the commission for it. (You will need to check with your affiliate company for exact cookie life time).

Notes
What I’m finding as I continue to monitor my smart website advertising campaign is how much pay per click advertising fluctuates; I guess this is due to the ads over which we have little control.

Affiliate advertising on the other hand can be much more accurate as you have much more control over the ads.

If for example your pages content is about the best computer hard drives, then you add your affiliate ads pointing directly to a hard disk sales page. Unlike pay per click you can also click your own ads to see the page your customer sees which in my opinion makes such as difference as you can then choose if you wish to use it.

Of course the beauty of pay per click is you simply paste the text and that is it, sit back at wait for the clicks, but just how accurate or relevant is the ad recognition to the content of the page? We get mixed reviews about this which could contribute to low click through rates or low $$ per click.

Smart Website Advertising Placement

Just about everyone has an idea of the best ad placement, on the right is the format that I try to follow, but what seems to work for one site may not work for another.

Sure try the placements that other people recommend, but make sure you keep playing around with the positioning to find what works for you.

On another note adding a Google search box is a great way for people to search your site, and it also gives more Google ads when searching your site.

Putting the search box at the bottom of the page means people will be more inclined to read the page content before going to another page.

The most important thing is to never become complacent with your advertising, always always keep striving, try new advertisers, different ad placement, after all it is just as important to know what does not work as what does.
