Submitting a Site to Search Engines Wait Don’t do it!

Did you know submitting a site to search engines could be a waste of your time and money?

Let’s start at the beginning

Realistically there are 4 main search engines you should be concerned with, Google, Yahoo, Bing (formerly MSN.com) , and ASK

There are lots of small search engines around, but just about all of these use the Indexes of the big boys.

Your main objective should be to get listed in the big 4, Google and Yahoo in particular, as these will bring your site most of its traffic.

Did you know submitting a site to search engines (particularly new sites) could literally take months to get indexed?

The way to get listed is to do one, two, or even all three of the following

a) Start a back linking campaign
b) Get links from article websites
c) Create a sitemap for your website

If you can get a link from another website that is currently indexed within one of the big four search engines you’ll be surprised how quickly your site will get listed

How does this work?
When Google, Yahoo etc check the already indexed website for new pages they will see your websites link, they will then hopefully follow the link and find your website, at first they might only find a page or two, but they will eventually find the rest of your site.

Of course there is more to it and than this, such as links from two sites, or higher ranking sites will make your website look even more important in the eyes of the search engines, helping to get your pages indexed faster as well as giving your site a better listing within the search engine search results.

Start a linking campaign
If you can get links to your website, fantastic, but most website owners will also want a link from your website to theirs, this I called reciprocal linking.

Although reciprocal linking is not as important as it was a few years, all the major search engines still use this as one measure of your websites importance.

Get links from article websites
If you want an easy way to get listed in a search engines index try signing up with a few article websites such as eZinearticles and articlebase then create a few articles with links back to your website. (Don’t create the same article for your website and the article site, or the search engines duplicate content filter will pick this up and probably remove your article.

You can also create blog accounts with sites such as Blogger, Wordpress or Squidoo and perform the same.

Create a sitemap for your website
A sitemap is very use and easy to create, and is a must for any website.

A sitemap is a single file which contains a road map of your website which makes it very easy for search engines to see the layout of your website in terms of overall and new pages.

This means less chance of pages getting missed, and pages getting seen, indexed and listed quicker.
