An IBM ThinkPad T41,T42 & T43 Memory Upgrade is very simple, but for one reason or another IBM chose to position the RAM slots in 2 locations.
Turn the laptop onto its back

The first is very easy to get to as its just a question of opening the bottom cover, but the other RAM port is located under the keyboard which can be a little bit fiddly, but it is still easy enough to get to just follow below.
Before working on any electronic devices or components always make sure you are earthed to protect your laptop from ESD damage.
- Remove the battery
- Again Make sure you are earthed to help prevent damage via ESD
- Accessing the First SIMM
- Remove the screw holding the RAM cover, and remove now you will see the first SIMM
To access the second SIMM
- Remove the plastic covers from the bottom front and remove the screws labelled 1 – there will be 4 of them.
- Then remove the one at the far right at the bottom labelled 2 –
- Next remove the 3 screws labelled 3
- And finally the 3 screws labelled 4
- Now turn the laptop back over onto its front
- Open the lid
- Lift out the palm rest from the bottom first
- And the keyboard will lift out
- Remove the keyboard connector
- Now you can get to the secondary SIMM

When it comes to upgrading the maximum a ThinkPad T41, T42 or T43 memory upgrade
can be in total is 2gb, any more than this is simply a waste of money as the laptop will not recognise any more.
