USB DSL Router Guide
The USB DSL
router is relatively new addition to the networking market, it
was only a matter of time before we saw the introduction of a
USB Modem / Router though as USB connects to pretty much every
conceivable piece of computer hardware today.
But is the USB router
the best way to go? Of course like any technology it has its
plus’s and minus’s
Firstly it’s simple
to configure, relatively cheap, you have to make sure any
devices connecting are USB 2 which offers performance of 480mbps
as opposed to USB 1, which is 12mbps and very slow.
The maximum cable
length is 5 metres or 16 feet.
There is a small load put onto any computer processor when using
USB.
If the above list if
acceptable and USB is for you, then the first thing to think
about is Wireless, even if you have no wireless devices the
extra cost is very small, this gives you room to grow in the
future when you have a wireless device.
Other point to think
about are, make sure the actual USB router or modem is USB 2,
there are still some USB 1 models on the market, and now matter
how cheap, they are simply a false economy in terms of slow
performance.
Differences
between a Cable USB router and a ADSL USB Modem
Cable type internet
services are usually setup with a small modem/router from your
provider, but to add extra connections you simply need a DSL
router.
If you have a phone
based service ADSL them you simply need an ADSL type modem which
actually replaces the free modem provided by your internet
supplier.
DSL routers are cheaper than ADSL modems as they are simply
already sharing a configured internet connection.
ADSL modems on the
other hand have to be able to provide a connection themselves
without any additional hardware.
