The USB to serial converter
Adding Serial Ports to a PC with Only USB Ports
The USB to Serial
Converter / Need to use a serial port , but only have USB ? It’s
very common today to find that a new computer that will seem to
have absolutely everything in terms of huge hard drive space,
super fast processor, DVD writer, a whole multitude of ports,
IR, Fire wire, USB, but yet will not have any serial ports.
Serial is perceived
today by manufacturers as a thing if the past, but this really
could not be further from the truth Sadly many computer
manufacturers have totally ignored including RS-232.
Many computer
manufacturers trying to push or rather force people to use such
standards as USB & Firewire as opposed to serial have really not
thought of the millions of users with hardware requiring a
serial connection.
But luckily all is
not lost; you can easily add a serial port by using a USB serial
port adapter.
A USB to Serial adapter is a quick and easy way to add a serial
port to a computer. It will even give you the option to add more
than one adapter on a single computer.
Various serial
devices requiring some type of serial port of course practically
all hardware these days is designed using technology such as
USB, but there is still so much hardware that still relies on
legacy technology such as hardware keys, RIPS, routers, faxes,
testing hardware.
It’s really down to you to assess as to whether the cost
of the USB to serial adapter is going to be cheaper than the
cost of replacing the hardware. Converters are not expensive to
buy so generally this would be the easiest option.
