What is the Best Antivirus Software Around?

What is the best antivirus software on the market?

Contrary to what some companies would have us believe no one company really makes the best antivirus program.

Before we continue bear in mind..

a) No antivirus software offers 100% protection.
b) A good antivirus package will find only viruses, what about other types of Malware?
c) Does the most common and expensive mean the best?
d) What should it do?
e) What should it not do?
f) What is the best antivirus software in our opinion?

a) No antivirus software offers 100% protection.
New pc viruses and strains of current viruses are hitting the internet all the time, this makes it impossible for any antivirus software provider to offer 100% protection, as there will always be the gap between finding the virus and creating the relevant patch for it.

The best way to get around this is to run more than one product, by this I mean use a real time scanner and then use an online scanner once a week as a backup.

b) A good antivirus package will find only viruses, what about other types of Malware?
Many antivirus packages only offer virus protection, whereas today your chosen antivirus software should also incorporate other Malware and spyware protection.

As with antivirus software it’s certainly worth running another anti-Malware product once a week as a safe guard offering twice the protection as you would be surprised how much one piece of software can miss.

c) Does the most common and expensive mean the best?
Personally no, I have found many of the most expensive products to have two big flaws, the size & the amount of resources it requires to run.

On older slower computers this can make them appear even slower when running even the most basic of applications.

d) What should it do?
Ideally it should be as unobtrusive as possible, small in terms of size and the resources it requires.

A good antivirus program should require low resources, and get on with its job leaving you to get on with yours.

e) What should it not do?
It should not tie up your system; require more resources and space than a lot of other apps.

Many large antivirus products seem to try and take over just about everything which can actually result in reduced system performance (sounds like the symptoms of some viruses)

As computers have got faster, of course many applications such as versions of office and Windows to name a few have increased in size as the functionality has increased, but some antivirus products have increased in size and required system resources even when the basic functionality remains the same.

f) What is the best antivirus software in our opinion?
Personally I like to be able to test any software properly before I buy and not just a cut down version either.

Over the years we have tested and implemented a whole range of antivirus software for clients, AVG, Avast, Trend and Panda have been products that we have stuck with, the full versions can all be downloaded as an evaluation, and AVG and Avast offer free cut down home editions which still offer better protection than some of the pay versions.

What is the best antivirus software for you?

When choosing any Antivirus product make sure you download the evaluation version first, this will save you money in the long term should you decide to remove it from whatever reasons.
