What is the Best Laptop Computer?

Just what is the best laptop and who makes it?

Realistically no company can claim to make the best laptop, after all most companies actually use the same parts, such as hard drives, motherboard components, processor, and of course graphics cards, plus one persons idea of the best laptop may not be someone else’s, this could be due to a whole host of factors such as screen size, does it have a built in web cam or TV card.

So the most important question is, what is the best laptop for you

When deciding what laptop computer is right for you, look at the specifications and then choose a laptop manufacturer who can offer this.

This needs to include..

  • RAM
Each version of Windows comes in 64 and 32bit editions, a 32bit version will support up to 3.5 GB of RAM, any more than this will be a waste and it cannot be utilized. 64 bit versions of Windows allows up to 16gb of RAM to be used. The problem with a 64bit operating system is compatibility, by this I mean many older applications including games may not be compatible even with its compatibility mode.

When choosing an operating system type, a standard 32 bit version is the one I would recommend for most users as 3.5 GB of RAM is easily adequate.

  • CPU
The CPU (central processor unit) or Processor is the brain of the computer, the more powerful the processor the faster calculations can be performed.

The most powerful laptop processors today are Quad core CPU’s, these in effect offer 4 processors on one chip, making it much faster than the fastest single or even dual core processors.

Quad core processors currently include Intel’s Core 2 Extreme and AMD’s Phenom.

  • Hard Disk
As with laptop models there is also no best laptop hard drive manufacturer, so it’s better to look at the spec rather than models, this should include a 7200rpm (spin speed), 8mb buffer RAM, and a storage capacity of around 500gb, (it’s worth noting that the size does not increase the speed)
  • Graphics
Graphics cards come in two distinct types, this is based on memory and how it uses it.

The first type is the shared memory variety, this normally comes on cheaper laptops, as it does not actually have any memory or RAM of its own, it borrows it from the computer main RAM, meaning less for the system.

The next type of graphics card is the dedicated memory type, this offers much better performance over the cheaper shared type as it has its own onboard memory.

Ideally a dedicated memory graphics card should have as much RAM as possible, and currently 512mb is very good, cards such as ATI’s Radeon HD 4570 offer very good graphics performance.

  • Screen
Personally I have always found laptop screens to be too small, the way I have always dealt with this is to find the smallest most powerful laptop around, and then use an external screen, this way I still have a very portable laptop, but I then connect it to a 22” monitor when I use if for gaming or other high end graphics.

Of course there are lots of 17” laptops around, but going for a laptop of this size is not the most portable machine, and if you’re one of those people who really does not need to move it, then you might want to ask yourself if you really need a laptop, as an equivalent or more powerful desktop computer can be purchased at a cheaper price.

When deciding what is the best laptop for you, it’s vital to do your homework to find the right one.
