As a safety net its not a bad idea to make sure your chosen hosting company will contact you prior to  it expiring so you at least have the choice of renewing or not.

Like just about any website starting small enables you to keep costs low, but what happens if you need to change technologies or your website grows very quickly, how can you expand? You could need more hosting space, faster servers to handle more visitors, even back office ad-ins such as databases, having the ability to expand quickly should be considered very early.
