Window XP service pack 2 is a very large update 272mb to be precise, the largest XP update thus far. If you’ve got a slow internet connection it’s gonna take a while to download.

This makes managing your firewall , antivirus and Windows updates easier as they are all looked after by the Security centre. You can disable any of the features if you so wish, as not all anti-virus software is picked up.

Popup blocker, which can be disabled for any required pop-ups , such as banking websites .

Download protection against potentially dangerous files , Better stability and less crashes as you can easily manage any third party add-in .
 

Automatic Updates

It good to allow Windows to download the updates in it’s own time.

It then notifies you when they are downloaded and then just kick off the install before you power off your computer. Easy

A proper firewall not like the original XP firewall .

Better privacy and attachment security . Sadly e-mail is still the number one way to get a virus.

With the extra security any potential attached files are automatically blocked.

If you find the security too high it can easily be changed to your own preference.

If you download Windows XP SP2 , it’s worth keeping a backup on CD , this way if you need to ever re-install Windows it’s much quicker.

Microsoft recommend a minimum of a Pentium 2 233mhz , with 64mb of ram and 1.8gb of hard drive space. To be honest I would not want to run it on this spec of computer, but if that’s what you have, plus your ok with the speed it’s going to run at, go for it.

Installing
A few points to bare in mind before you upgrade, this will help to make everything go a little smoother. Always make sure you’ve backed up your files.

If you are using a laptop make sure it’s plugged into the mains , I’ve no idea what would happen if a laptop ran out of battery before the end of a SP2 install, but if any one knows drop me a line.

Make sure no other users are logged in.

Make sure the account you are installing from has Administrator privileges.

Make sure your computer has the latest of all other updates.

Remove any software you don’t need , this is always as good thing as it will free up disk space.

When you install Window XP service pack 2 it’s not a quick install , but it is straight forward.

It’s just a case of running the installation file and off it goes.

If you need to remove window XP SP2 for any reason ,

Go to Control Panel “ you can just type control from the Start / Run menu “

Select Add / Remove Programs , make sure the “ Show Updates “ box is ticked .

Scroll down and find  Windows XP Service Pack 2 , select remove.

But hopefully now you’ve got window XP service pack 2 installed ok .
