If your computer system has suddenly started giving you problems without giving you any on screen errors its worth checking the error logs to find out if any errors have been generated.
To do this, from the START menu, select CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS and then EVENT VIEWER or simply right click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE now choose EVENT VIEWER.
In this section we will cover many of the windows errors with a general description of the error together with possible causes and resolutions.
One thing to remember basically any computer error occurs when something on your system has changed; this can be many things from a simple file change through to a change in the registry. As a quick fix, if you haven’t already attempted this, and you’re using windows XP a simple system restore will enable your system to roll back to the previous configuration, this can save lots of time.
You can read more about this on our Windows XP repair page.
The very last resort is a complete system reinstallation, it’s very rare that this is required as long as you are prepared to get down to your systems nuts and bolts level.
Windows Error code 0 Error success the operation completed successfully
This could be considered an error message, but you’ll only ever see windows error code 0 when something has run successfully, this can include everything from system updates through to a system process or application starting.
Windows Error Code 1 Error invalid function, Incorrect function
We generally see Error code 1 when an incorrect function has been performed, this happens most commonly in two scenarios.
- When a driver update has been run, re-installing the older drivers should resolve this. It’s always worth checking for known issues on the manufacturer’s website before upgrading drivers just to make sure there are no issues. Usually a simply system restore will correct this error.
- After a piece of software has been installed, this will usually be something that interacts with the system such as a utility or even spy ware or a virus, generally a system restore will correct this, but before this remember to run a virus and spyware check, checkout our virus and spyware articles if you need a hand.
Windows Error Code 2 Error file not found. The system cannot find the file specified.
- Error code 2 is an error we all see at one time or another, this largely happens due to an invalid shortcut, either the original file has been deleted or moved or, it has been known for some people to actually copy / backup the shortcut rather than the actual file.
- If your not sure if your copying the actual file or the short cut, either right click on the file, if you see Find Target then your looking at the shortcut, luckily from here you can see the path to the original file. An easier way is to simply open the file and then, from the FILE menu select SAVE AS, and then save to your desired backup device.
